Welding student Lane Wright (WT-90) spent 2 weeks working on an anniversary gift for his girlfriend. He is currently finishing up with the fabrication training module and used the techniques he’s learned to create the 20 pound metal flower. The giant sunflower was truly a labor of love as Wright saw similar projects online and crafted the sunflower from scratch. “It’s was a lot of freehand and guessing as I’ve not done anything like this before.” Wright was able to use scrap metal from the shop. “The only thing I bought was the metal colander in front.” Wright used MIG and TIG welding techniques to complete the sunflower. The part he found most challenging was the TIG welding needed to attach the thin metal of the petals to the center of the flower. “Several people and my instructor helped me with the tack welding and creating the color variations on the petals.”
